The Disaster Artist

“Oh, Hi Mark.”
This is the funniest, most inspirational movie this year. The Disaster Artist is based off of the book by the same name and the best worst movie The Room. A little back ground about The Room from IMDB “Johnny is a successful banker who lives happily in a San Francisco town house with his fiancée, Lisa. One day, inexplicably, she gets bored with him and decides to seduce his best friend, Mark. From there, nothing will be the same again.” The Disaster Artist follows what happened leading up to The Room and during production. If you haven’t seen The Room watch it before watching The Disaster Artist. The movie stars James Franco, Dave Franco, Seth Rogen, Paul Scheer, and Alison Brie.
Like The Room were Tommy Wiseau starred, directed, produced, and wrote it James Franco for The Disaster Artist starred and directed it. Franco did a great job of showing the real life melt down of Tommy into a crazy man who thinks everyone is against him. It’s very funny but also very heart breaking to watch as a man’s dream of becoming and big-time actor breaks right before his eyes. My only thing at first that was annoying was James Franco doing a Tommy Wiseau impression it didn’t work for the first 20 minutes or so until they got to Hollywood. Dave Franco is really the main character, Greg Sestero, we follow him and see him meet Tommy and move to LA with him. We watch him have more success than Tommy but to only crash down with him at the premiere. But all of the acting is solid great work from every single person. James Franco for Best Actor.
It’s weird how they started filming this movie. At first it looks like it is going to be a steady movie and have some good composition. Then once the movie starts to film it turns into a kind of documentary style of film making shaky at times but still at other time. I’m not a huge guy on lighting but it’s very much documentary style and it can look dark in some places. But on the set, they made it look like the movies lighting. So, at time it can be dark or look bad but it was purposely done that way. That is my second criticism of the movie the lighting at time can be poorly done in scenes not done on set.
Yes, this movie is funny. But it can also be a very true statement about film making. Not everything can go your way. You may want to make the next big thing and get a movie that ends up being The Room or Transformers. Except The Room is fun. This is a great movie and is one of my favorite films of this year. Besides the lighting and some camera work this is a outstanding movie. Go out and see this one in the theatre.
